University of Houston Office of Admissions

Hi, We, at the University of Houston (UH), hope the new academic year is off to a tremendous start. Thank you for your continued partnership; our work depends on your support. Our best days are ahead as the University moves into a new era of success and doubles down on our commitment to student success in our pursuit to become a top 50 public university. It is an exciting time to be a Houston Cougar! Below are updates that may help your discussions with students navigating their college search.

  • Campus Visit Opportunities & Cougar Preview: If you or your students will be in the Houston area we encourage you to stop by campus and say hello! Students and Counselors are welcome to join one of our daily campus tours. View our tour schedule online. Our visit experience includes a 30-minute overview of the University and admission process, followed by a 90-minute walking tour led by current UH students. We also offer Group-Tour experiences.

In addition to our daily experiences, Cougar Preview is our grand on-campus experience for students to get to know their future home. We have two opportunities this fall for you or your students to attend:

  • Saturday, Sept. 30th: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with additional experiences until 3 p.m.

  • Saturday, Oct. 28th: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. with additional experiences until 3 p.m.

More information about all of our campus visit options can be found on our UH Visit webpage.

  • In-Person and Virtual Engagement Opportunities: We will be on the road very soon and welcome opportunities to connect in-person and virtually with you and your students this fall. To find who your assigned admissions officer is, please use our Find My UH Counselor tool.

  • NACAC Conference: We hope to see you in Baltimore, Maryland, at this year's NACAC Conference! If you will be in attendance, please be sure to stop by our booth at the NACAC Counselor College Fair during the conference!

Key Admissions Application Updates: Lastly, I want to take the time to share important information regarding our application:

  • Test Optional Admission Review: UH remains test-optional for this year’s application cycle. Please know when we say test-optional, we mean it: last year, more than 40% of our applicant pool applied without test scores. Students are not disadvantaged in the evaluation for admission or scholarships by choosing to apply without a test score.

  • We've Gone Paperless: Applicants are required to self-report academic information or provide using an electronic data interchange (Naviance, Parchment, etc.). Students must self-report their core grades (English, social studies, science and math), including their in-progress senior-year coursework. We recalculate their GPA on an unweighted 4.0 scale. Once admitted, we require a final transcript to verify completion and validate self-reported grades. We do not accept hard-copy transcripts. Please review our Official Transcript Guidelines for additional details.

  • Our Commitment to Affordability: The University of Houston ranks 39th in the nation on the social mobility index, among the highest ranking institutions in Texas. We are committed to ensuring that all students have access to an affordable education. Out-of-state and international students who receive $1,000 or more from various competitive University scholarships may qualify for an out-of-state tuition waiver. This means waiver recipients will pay in-state tuition if awarded an Academic Excellence Scholarship. To maximize eligibility for our University Scholarships, please encourage your students to submit their application to us by our Priority Scholarship Deadline of Nov. 1, 2023. Supporting information, such as application fee/fee waiver, self-reported transcript information and test scores (if applicable), must be received by Nov. 8, 2023. Incoming freshman students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership and community engagement are encouraged to apply for the Tier One Scholarship, which is the University of Houston’s most prestigious academic scholarship program and is housed within our Honors College.

  • New Application Deadline: We have adjusted our freshmen application deadline to June 3, 2024 for fall admission this year.

Thank you for being an essential resource for your students. If you or your students should have any questions, please reach out to us!

With Cougar Pride,
